Lika doesn’t think much about her shadow, until one day, it starts to act strangely, not following her lead but doing its own thing. Lika decides to ignore it, but her shadow gets bigger, and its behaviour continues to get more outrageous and overwhelming until it eventually sweeps her away to a shadow land and to the titular Circus of Shadows. Here she learns to interact and play with her shadow, and they come to an understanding of each other.
The blue, green, red and pink colour palette, as well as the darker shades of the murky shadows in the illustrations are very effective in creating an attractive, atmospheric, and thought-provoking read. Branković introduces discussion of the human psyche in simple terms suitable for her young readers. The fable of the shadows could be used for reflection on emotional trauma and turmoil, and uncomfortable or painful feelings. The story ends on a hopeful note: ‘But wherever there are shadows there is also light. And when the shadows dance, it’s always a good idea to join in the fun.’
