In March 2009, 100 strangers arrived at a run-of-the-mill meeting for the Association of Women for Action and Research (AWARE) and staged a shocking takeover of the leading gender-equality organisation. Civil society veterans, the media and the public raced to find out who AWARE’s mysterious new leaders were, and what covert motives united them. The following events became the stuff of national legend: starting with an astonishing coup and culminating in an extraordinary declaration of equality and justice.

The dramatic story, known as the AWARE Saga, was told in AWARE’s 12-episode podcast Saga, released in 2020 and 2021 and co-produced by Kelly Leow and Jasmine Ng. Saga was Singapore’s first long-form narrative podcast and quickly gained international attention for its gripping storytelling and social insight. It won Silver at both the 2022 Anthem Awards, the social impact branch of the Webby Awards, and the 2023 Signal Awards, which honour international podcast achievements.

The first book of its kind in Singapore, The Saga Podcast Transcripts compiles all 12 episodes of the podcast (which themselves comprise firsthand testimonies from activists, observers, and ordinary citizens involved in the AWARE Saga). It also contains a foreword by diplomat Professor Tommy Koh, plus an introduction by Bharati Jagdish, journalist and the host of Saga.
